Kochi was one of the Indian Ocean's great trading ports, and its old quarter, Fort Kochi, still shows it: Chinese fishing nets on the shoreline, a 16th-century Portuguese church, Dutch-era warehouses now converted into galleries and cafés. It's a walking city best explored slowly, ideally ending at a Kathakali performance, where dancers spend hours applying hand-painted makeup before telling stories from the Hindu epics through expression alone.

South along the coast, Varkala breaks from Kerala's usual flat shoreline with dramatic laterite cliffs standing over the Arabian Sea, while Kovalam and Marari offer the classic palm-backed beach. We usually pair a heritage day in Kochi with two or three beach days, giving you culture and coastline without the itinerary feeling rushed.
