The backwaters are the reason most travellers first hear of Kerala. A slow-moving network of rivers, canals, and the vast Vembanad Lake, they thread through coconut groves and paddy fields that sit below sea level, kept dry by centuries-old dyke systems built by local farmers.
We charter handcrafted kettuvallam houseboats, restored from vessels once used to carry rice and spice along these same waterways, and staff each one with a private captain, chef, and steward. You'll wake to mist over the lagoon, eat Kerala fish curry cooked to order on deck, and watch village life unfold from the water: toddy tappers scaling palms, women washing clothes on stone steps, kingfishers diving for breakfast.

How many days do I need for a Kerala backwater tour package?
One night aboard a houseboat is the standard and covers the classic Alleppey-to-Kumarakom stretch comfortably. If backwaters are the focus of your whole trip rather than one stop on a wider Kerala itinerary, we'd suggest pairing it with two or three nights on land nearby, so you're not spending a full day purely in transit.
Is a private houseboat more expensive than a shared cruise?
Private charters cost more than joining a shared day cruise, but every houseboat we book is a private charter for your group only, with your own captain, chef, and route. We don't offer shared-boat departures.
Can backwaters be combined with Munnar and Alleppey in one trip?
Yes, this is our most-requested route: Kochi, then Munnar's tea hills, then down to the backwaters around Alleppey or Kumarakom. It works well as a 6 to 8 day loop starting and ending near Kochi airport.
