Kerala is a year-round destination, which surprises a lot of first-time visitors expecting a narrow 'peak season' window. The state's coastal, hill, and backwater regions each respond differently to the seasons, and knowing which month suits which part of your itinerary makes a real difference to how the trip feels.
October to February: the classic window
This is Kerala's most popular stretch, and for good reason. The southwest monsoon has cleared by late September, humidity drops, and daytime temperatures settle into a comfortable 23–32°C along the coast, cooler still in the hills. Skies are mostly clear, which matters if Munnar's mountain views or a backwater sunset cruise are on your list. December and January are the busiest and most expensive months to book houseboats and hill stays, so we recommend confirming dates at least six to eight weeks out.
March to May: hot, but good value and good for Ayurveda
Temperatures climb, particularly along the coast, where April and May can feel humid and heavy. This is when hotel rates ease and popular sites are noticeably quieter. It's also, counterintuitively, considered a strong window for Ayurveda: many traditional practitioners view the pre-monsoon heat as a time the body is naturally more receptive to detoxification treatments. If your trip is wellness-led rather than sightseeing-led, this window is worth considering.
June to September: the monsoon, and why some travellers choose it deliberately
Kerala's monsoon is dramatic rather than a washout: expect heavy, often predictable downpours in the afternoon with clearer mornings, all against a landscape that turns startlingly green. Hill stations like Munnar and Wayanad are at their most lush, waterfalls run full, and Ayurveda centres consider this the most therapeutically potent season of the year for treatment, since the cooler, humid air is believed to open the body's pores and improve absorption of herbal oils. Houseboat cruising continues on the backwaters, though some routes adjust for water levels. It's a quieter, cheaper, and increasingly popular window for travellers who don't mind rain.
Our take, by trip type
- First-time sightseeing trip (backwaters, hills, heritage): October to February
- Ayurveda or wellness-focused trip: June to September, or March to May
- Beach-focused trip: November to February for calm seas and clear skies
- Budget-conscious travel with good weather trade-offs: March, September, or October (shoulder months)
